St Johns Park resident Deric Ly, 32, will make a difference to the lives of those living with cancer when he shaves his locks on Friday as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
Deric Ly has surpassed his goal of raising $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. As of today Deric has raised $16,632.
Between March 12-15 more than 150,000 people will get sponsored to shave or colour their hair to support Australians with blood cancer and fund research.
Fairfield Champion reported that Mr Ly said he decided to take part in this year’s event after watching a Korean TV show featuring a young girl suffering from leukaemia.
“I learnt a lot about the disease, its diagnoses and treatment,” he said. “I was very touched because it can strike anyone at any time.
“I also learnt a person is diagnosed with leukaemia every 46 minutes.”
Considered one of Australia’s biggest fundraisers, the Shave involves thousands of people shaving, colouring or waxing their hair each year in March to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Mr Ly is participating in the World’s Greatest Shave and will have his head shaved by Fairfield City Mayor, Frank Carbone at the Freedom Plaza this Friday.
“Thank you supporters of this great Cause. Target goal has been reached but it doesn’t stop there. No words can express my deepest feelings and gratitude for all the generosity from Family and Friends” said Mr Deric Ly.
Although survival rates are improving, blood cancers like these are the third biggest cause of cancer death in Australia.
The money raised will support the Leukaemia Foundation’s important work to beat blood cancer.
