Wanderers season on life support after mid-week loss

The Western Sydney Wanderers’ A-League season is hanging by a thread, after another loss, this time 2-1 to Melbourne Victory on Tuesday night.

The Wanderers had plenty of work to do during the 90 minutes, and were responsible for several chances in the first half against a determined and impressive Melbourne Victory outfit.

Carl Valeri opened the scoring the scoring for the visitors on 27 minutes, with a stunning strike from the right edge of the 18 yard box. Wanderers’ keeper Ante Covic could do little to stop the Victory from taking the lead on this occasion.

However, the home side didn’t drop their heads, and had several close chances to equalise before the halftime break, but were unable to do so, and the statistics showed an even match on the pitch, despite trailing 0-1 at the change.

Wanderers’ fans would have been heartened from the performance from their side in the first half, and known they were close enough if good enough after the break, with the words of coach Tony Popovic wringing in their ears.

The redeeming moment came on 55 minutes, when Nick Kalmar, recently signed from Melbourne City, delivered a strike worthy of sending the parochial home crowd of over 14,600 into raptures.

Kalmar’s strike, in only his second game for the club, gave the team further confidence, with more close chances going by as a result of the equaliser.

However, the Victory weren’t to be denied, with Gui Finkler scoring with 10 minutes remaining on the clock to give the Victorians a 2-1 lead.

The Wanderers kept pushing for a second equaliser, but it wasn’t to be, as they ended the 2014 half of their season without a win to their name, and only 4 points in total.

The A-League goes into a three week recess for the Asian Cup, and the Wanderers don’t return to the field until February 1, when they head to Melbourne for their first meeting with City.
