Western Sydney came back to form with vengeance securing a 3-1 victory over Perth Glory tonight at Parramatta securing their second place on the A-league ladder.
The Wanderers delivered one of their strongest performances of the season. Glory was never in the match with few chances forced into defending Western Sydney attacking style of play.
After a number of chances for Western Sydney, Spiranovic opened the scoring turning a cross from Mark Bridge into a goal in the 27 minute.
With an ecstatic home crowd Western Sydney secured a free kick 35 meters out just five minutes later. Mooy skipped the wall and the keeper to score directly off the free kick.
Western Sydney dominated the first half in every respect with more possession, 14 shots – 5 and 5 corners – 0.
Perth was still struggling early in the second half until a defensive lapse by Wanderers allowed Smeltz to secure an easy goal in the 54 minute. The goal not only helped Glory on the scoreboard but was able to change the mood of the match. Perth Glory started to attack for the first time in the match.
The Wanderers regained control of the match in the 69 m with Bridge securing Western Sydney’s third goal from a penalty kick.
Andrew Mooy was the player of the match, dominating the shots on targets in addition to his first goal. Šantalab was injured in the 77m and substituted out of the match.
History was on the Wanderers side with Perth never defeating Western Sydney and the Wanderers never losing more than two games in a row during the clubs short history.
At full time the Wanderers dominated all the shot count (23-10), less so the possession (56%-44%) and most importantly the scoreboard.
A slightly smaller than usual crowd at Wanderland (just over 14,000 – a sell out but less members than usual making the match) were not only treated to a stunning Wanderers victory but also a dazzling fireworks display to mark Australia Day just before full time.
