A resurgent Western Sydney has secured second place on the A League ladder after a 1-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets tonight at Hunter Stadium.
The Jets dominated early controlling possession but was not able to gain any territorial advantage.
The Jets goal keeper Ben Kennedy scored a rare yellow card (21m) and conceded a free kick after misplacing a foot outside the box and handling the ball.
Kennedy’s troubles only got worse when Mark Bridge headed a ball from Oni and Haliti to score the Wanderers only goal of match in the 32 minute. Jet supporters called offside but the officials disagreed.
After the goal the Wanderers regained control of the match and remained in control for the rest of the 1st half.
The Wanderers opened strongly in the second half with a number of chances but was not able to covert them to goals. Newcastle kept the pressure on with strong defense, more possession but few chances.
Star Wanderers player Shinji Ono took a heavy hit in the second half and was substituted out of match late in the second half.
Wanderers fans also dominated the crowd numbers out numbering Jets supporters – with mini buses full of Red & Black fans making the 2 hour road trip up the F3 to Hunter Stadium. The 16,634 strong crowd was largest for a Jets home game this season.
Next week the Wanderers head back home for the Grand Final replay against the Central Coast Mariners. Live on 893fm.com.au from 6:30PM (Kick off 7PM) Monday, December 23rd.
